Interstates, like most other highways, are numbered.
The East-West interstates are usually numbered with even numbers, while the North-South interstates are odd numbered. Meaning interstate number such as 10, 30, and 84 are all East-West routes. Those such as 5, 49, and 95 are all North-South routes. Three digit routes such as 110, 330, or 610 would indicate a loop, or spur. Generally, those beginning with an even number are loops and those beginning with an odd number are spurs.
Exits are generally numbered sequentially and match the mile markers. Thus exit 39 would correspond with mile marker 39. These mile markers normally begin at
the state line, or beginning of the interstate if the terminus is within a state. Mile markers begin at the West and increase as you travel to the East on East-West routes. They begin at the South and increase as you
travel to the North on North-South routes.
In some states, the exits are numbered sequentially, ie 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. California has not numbered any exits, and mile markers when used, restarted at each county line. This is beginning to change and mile markers and numbered exits are starting to appear.
There are exceptions to the above in a number of places.

The Interstate Wizard site is pretty easily navigated, using buttons at the top, and left side of most pages.
A few pages also have navigation buttons at the bottom of the page. Each state map page will have links to the individual interstate pages. If the interstate you are looking for isn't on one of the buttons, it probably isn't online just yet. Check the Whats New page for the latest additions and updates to the site. The state maps are active and clickable when that section is available. Cities located along the interstate are listed on the right side of the page. Some of these cities have been linked to various websites associated with that city.
